Our Center for Energy is seeking to hire a new Ingenious Partner for our location in Vienna. Applications are invited for a: PhD Thesis “Green Foundry 4.0 - Paving the Way to Decarbonization in Aluminum Casting”

The project aims at the development and testing of a novel thermal energy recovery and reuse system applicable to aluminum casting and similar industries. In such industries the production is built of independent production islands. Because of the discontinuous nature of the production process, thermal coupling and intelligent network operation can leverage significant potential for energy savings. Such an integrated approach connects thermal energy sinks and sources in casting in a flexible and efficient manner. The main challenges are the efficient and economic energy recovery, the batch-process inherent dynamics and the need for flexibility in thermal energy distribution.

The work will compile a mixture of theory and experiments and is carried out in the frame of a funded cooperative research project. Thermal components will be developed and tested in a controlled laboratory environment. The overall system will be first tested and optimized in a semi-industrial scale at the Leichtmetallkompetenzzentrum Ranshofen and then transferred to a real operating production plant. The PhD thesis supports the projects in the development of solutions for the reduction of de direct or indirect CO2 emission in aluminum casting by up to 30% and will pave the way to decarbonization in industry.

Candidate profile

  • Master´s degree in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, physics or similar
  • Knowledge in thermal energy systems and/or heat transfer required
  • Hands-on mentality and willingness to gain new knowledge
  • Experience in modelling and simulation of thermal system highly appreciated
  • Experience in automation and control advantageous
  • Willingness to travel within Austria
  • Very good German language skills (both written and spoken)


What to expect:

AT least € 2.115,- gross for 30 hours/week based on the collective agreement (Forschungs-KV).
